How to Make a Trivia App

We often get asked “how to make a trivia app”. We have been making trivia products for over a decade. These include trivia apps, board games, TV game shows and web trivia games. In addition, we have run a trivia licensing business for over 12 years and have supplied content to QuizUp, Trivia HQ, Trivial Pursuit and more. In addition, we own and manage Big Daily Trivia, one of the most popular trivia sites on the internet.

We are well placed to provide advice on your trivia app or website. . Below is some of the key advice we give to all clients.

Know Your Audience

You need to decide who your audience before you start developing your trivia app or website or licensing trivia questions. There are many trivia products on the market and each one targets a specific audience. For example, if you are looking to target the older market you will likely want brain training puzzles as this will index well. If you are looking for the younger market then you will need celebrity trivia and recent content to keep your content engaged.

We advise starting English language based product first before looking to localise with other languages. Trivia content in languages other than English are more expensive to license.

Choose Your Distribution Channel

Should I make a trivia app or a quiz website? This is a common question that everyone asks at the start of their journey to develop a trivia product. There is no right answer to this question. There are challenges with both channels. Apps are hard to gain an audience initially as the app stores are very crowded. But once you get an install you are on the users device. A website is easier to initially find an audience but you are more limited in your monetisation options. Another good option is to create a website first and then use an ‘app wrapper’ to distribute in the app stores. A good examples of these are Go Native.

What Type of Trivia Content Should I Use?

You need to ensure that the trivia content matches your audience. There is no point targeting an older audience and having “would you rather questions” or indeed a younger audience and having content that is mainly about historical topics that predate the audience.

Multiple Choice Questions

This is the most popular question type as the content is inclusive and we have a wide range of topics.

Put Them In Order Trivia

This genre is also very popular with all trivia apps and websites. The audience is asked a question and then they need to put the content in order. An example of this trivia can be seen by clicking here

Picture Questions

We receive a lot of enquires about picture trivia questions. This type of content can be very engaging but there are some challenges that publishers need to wary of. Firstly, you will need to license the images from an image library such as Getty or Shutterstock. No question database library has the rights to sub license images so be wary if you are offered these as you could be infringing copyright law.
